Shittake Mushrooms

No, I've never eaten them.

There's this stupid movie (wasn't that stupid until this happened) my kids watch called Spy Kids. It's a series of 3 and in the first two, one of the main characters jokingly says, "oh shittake mushrooms" during a moment of crisis. She pauses at just the right moment during that word....you get where I'm going with this.

My kids began saying this oh-darn-it phrase and we nipped it in the bud by asking them to say holy moley or holy cow or ANYTHING ELSE. Emmy is now catching herself in the middle of the statement before she fixes herself. And she stops right in the middle, well, you know exactly where she stops!

Well, last night, just like I knew she would, Emmy dropped a toy outside and said, "oh sh*#, I mean, holy moley." My neighbor - another mother looks at me like I'm the devil raising my replacement. I've been controlling my natural-born sailor's mouth for 5 years and Spy Kids is what is making me look bad. Urg.

I always knew you were a bad mother. Now I have proof!

I have a pretty clean mouth, I dare say even ultra-clean. Well, that was until this blasted operation on my knee. In pain, I've said words I didn't even know existed. I just hope Skylar doesn't hear or pick any of them up. Until now all I've caught her saying is "oh my freaking heck," and yes, I live in Utah.

Oh man! Remind me not to let my kids see that one!

This makes me laugh. I can imagine how horrified you were. Just remind yourself that you know you are a good mom and that is all that matters. For the love of spy kids.

Yeah.... I've had Ali saying something akin to the Hoover Dam with an it on the end... and in context to. I'm 95% sure where she's heard it, but can't say for sure. The first time I heard it was in exasperation to her sister to was getting her stuff... After about the 5th time and 3rd day in a row she got her first taste of "hot sauce" a very minuscule portion, but I haven't heard it since! (Perhaps that's cruel and unusual, but I noticed she was doing it just because she knew she shouldn't. that had to stop. Besides, I gave her a lime tootsie roll 5 minutes later).

My super righteous 6 year old (who stresses if he does anything wrong) called his little brother an SOB a few months ago while playing video games. I was SO shocked and couldn't stop laughing.. So for a minute there, they thought is was a funny thing to say. But I quickly corrected them.. hello! This is ME we're talking about here!

oh, and ya right--your worst quality is procrastination.. look who has all their shopping done before December.

Your kids say the darnest things :)

Don't feel too bad. My husband has been known to let a few swear words slip, say...a lot of the time. So, I'm sure my kids will have a lot more slip ups than yours.

You are such a good writer. I feel like I am reading a column in readers digest when I read your blogs. Funny story! I love it- it probably won't be as funny when it's my kid doing the same thing, but for now it is so funny!!

We wanted to leave our children with you if the unmentionable happened. But maybe they'd be better off with John..

We have a similar issue at our house. Regarding Evan Almighty, The kids walked in at the very end and are now convinced that God didn't flood the world, a lake flooded. It is funny and horriable that I inadvertently taught them false doctrine!!! We have read and reread Noah and the Ark story, but I think they still doubt it.

Trust me Brian, if the unmentionable happened your kids would be MUCH better off with us . . . except for the whole raising them Mormon thing . . . if that is important . . . possibly.

Hi, I am a cousin of Audra's, and I came across your blog (very entertaining by the way) and I noticed that one of you is from Vacaville, CA. It Caught my eye since I live in Fairfield, CA. My husband is from Fairfield. Do you still have family here?

My kids have learned interesting things from's movies too. Like Shrek, There are a few choice phrases in there too!

That is very funny. What luck that they would pick up that phrase and then be overheard by your neighbor (I bet she'll be moving real soon especially if she has kids!) You should screen movies more carefully for your kids or just come back here where we don't judge!

I Want to Hear From You!
