Wills and Such

It wasn't until after I was pregnant with Emmy that we purchased life insurance. What's even more terrible than waiting until after we had children to purchase life insurance was that it wasn't until last night that we signed an official will. So, our wonderful friends came over for a "Will Signing Party". (We had to cheer it up somehow - I mean, come on, we're discussing imminent death. )
Our great friend, John, also comes with this great perk where he turns into a lawyer for us and one who's willing to hook us up big-time! He and his wife Eli showed up late last night with Chris and Jenny (we needed witnesses for the signing) for the ordeal.
I can't explain the sense of relief that came with the signing. I love knowing that our children will be taken care of how we want them to be. It's also reassuring that they'll be with people we want them to be with if anything was to happen to Steven and me.
Though some of it was a little more complicated than "everything goes to the kids and the kids go to so-and-so" it was well worth it all. I would highly recommend everyone doing it. The weight is now off our shoulders and Steven and I can definitely sleep easier. Thanks a million John. We owe you big!

We need to do that, too. Good for you. You are such responsible parents.

alright so here's the question - we've worked out who the kids will go with in the case of our unexpected death. we spoke to our friend who is also a lawyer and he said all we needed was a very simple statement signed and whitnessed - is that true, or do we need a notary and a specificlyworded/legally binding document?
i always thought this would be an ideal subject matter for an enrichment, don't you think?

It's good to think about that... When you're a little more settled and the baby isn't brand new I'll have to pick your brain about this subject. I hope you move went well today! I hate to say it but we have minimal life insurance right now, hopefully after we're done with residency we can invest more into it! (well... most definitely!)

To answer Natalie's question, the simple statment MAY be all you need to make sure your kids go to the right individuals. However, there are several, several issues that this simple statement would not cover. For example, who would get any money left for them, how would it be managed, what if you are not dead but you are incapacitated, etc. I could go on.
I would be happy to answer any questions you or Leslie might have. Mindy, could you provide me with their contact information or provide them with mine? Thanks!

I would love to get ours done but I don't know any lawyers and don't have the money to pay one! I was hoping a paper like Natalie's would work also! Does it? And great idea Natalie for an enrichment night! I am giving it to my R.S. on Sunday!
